Singapore: the vacation

Being here feels like the vacation at the end of our trip.  Jack spent a semester here in 2006 so we knew what to expect and planned to stay here for two whole weeks.  There is so much to see and do!

BELOW: We met up with my friend Angela from my semester abroad in Switzerland (and coincidentally from CMU).  The desert was made of dragon fruit.

BELOW LEFT: Mandarin trees are traditional for Chinese New Year.  BELOW RIGHT: This enormous jade Buddha is traveling the world to inspire peace.  There were monks blessing people and chanting in a very throaty (creaky) way.  The statue is valued at $5 million.

Dragons are everywhere.  Rawr!

Another reason for the long stay in Singapore was our plan to windsurf a lot.  We both learned how when we were on exchange and it’s been hard to find places to do it ever since.

windsurfing<- this isn’t actually us…

So far we’ve been out twice.  Windsurfing is both fun and frustrating due to the wind and our rusty beginner skills.  Also, it is a full body workout, particularly when balancing in low wind.  By that, I mean that I wake up aching from my shoulders to the arches of my feet. Yesterday we breezed away from the beach and then spent 90 minutes fighting the wind, the tide and the current from the outlet of a small river to get back in to shore.  It was a little tiny bit like being shipwrecked.  Today we are recovering from brutal sunburns on our legs.  We wear long sleeved shirts and next time I’ll be wearing leggings too.

Despite these details, it is exhilarating.
