toilet vs shower

We have now stayed at a few hostels where the toilet is down the hall but the shower is right in your room. This doesn't make any sense to me, as people don't generally wake up in the middle of the night and stumble out (Risking being locked out!) with an urgent need to shower. You also shower once a day (hopefully) but use the toilet a bit more often.

Another toilet riddle from Europe that I have not solved is the dual-button flush which is on every toilet. This is a little embarrassing, because I am sure that I have wasted quite a bit of water by now, but it is impossible to figure out! Is the smaller button less water? Or is the smaller button for the few cases where you need a lot of water? It seems like on every toilet, no matter which button you push, the same amount of water comes out. Sometimes pushing the large half depresses both sides, and sometimes it is the small side. Is the whole thing just designed to drive you crazy? A lesson not to look to hard for a pattern or meaning where none exists?
