Le Mont Saint Michel, Part 2

It was such a cool spot that we wanted to share some more pictures.   The entire city/fort was built on a rock sticking up out of the ocean (sometimes you could walk there at low tide if you weren’t sucked into quicksand).  In order to build the successively bigger churches on the pointy top of this rock, they had to build huge crypts underneath to support the extremities of the church on top.  So, after you wind your way up through a the compact and vertical “town” on the land side of the island, you can look down from the plaza in front of the church at the very top, and see that you are standing on 4-5 levels of old stuff- crypts, workshops, kitchens, almeries.  Those stack for 80 or 90 feet straight down on the seaward side of the church… and then the natural cliffs start, right down into the ocean.  It was great.

We’re currently in Paris, and extremely busy- yes, the Mt St Michel was about a week and a half ago.  We bought 7 day unlimited transit passes along with four day unlimited museum passes, and have been trying our hardest to get our money’s worth.  After Notre Dame (Paris) and general walking around on Monday (including ogling the Eiffel Tower), we took the train to Chartres to see that Cathedral on Tuesday, as well as the 2 other beautiful churches and a very cute town.  Then we started our museum passes on Wednesday and got serious.  Orsay, Napoleon’s Tomb/Army Museum AND about 1.5 hours of Pompidou on Wednesday, then Saint Chappel, The Notre Dame Tower and Archeological Crypt, and the Conservatoire today (Thursday).  The next couple days will be just as crazy.
Does anybody want to speak up and say that the Villa Savoye is crap and not worth going to?  We have free admission with our museum pass, but if someone has been there before and it stinks, it would sure be nice to know that now…

  1. What's so great about a white box on stilts?...

The afternoon might be better spent getting merry on house wine at a Paris bar or bringing your own bottle to the lawn near the Eiffle Tower, ogling while enjoying the weather and people watching.

  2. A most belatedly happy birthday. Would you believe us when we say we will do better next year? While visiting so many museums gets overwhelming, it is worth having aching feet.
