volunteering

My mom has always encouraged us to volunteer and as cliché as it sounds, I find that you really do get as much as you give.

After two years of not doing community service, I just recently got back into the volunteer spirit here in Seattle.
In Boston, I was a Big Sister mentor for 2+ years.  It was (and still is) a great experience.  However it was also a big commitment of both time and emotional energy that I don’t feel ready to repeat, so I looked for something I could do that is productive without requiring quite as much of me.  When I search projects in our community, I realized I do not have the spirit to take on some of the more depressing aspects of society like youth violence and homelessness.  I also found that places like animal shelters have a waiting list  for volunteer positions.
Eventually I found a great (though somewhat limited) site, called Seattle Works,  where you can search for volunteer opportunities by time of day and different categories.
Last week I went to my first event where I helped sort donated baby clothes and supplies at West Side Baby which facilitates donations to the most needy children and families.  It was perfect – I met nice people and felt useful but didn’t need to make a huge commitment.
When the weather is cooler I also hope to do some city park maintenance projects with seattle.gov/parks.
