I like most aspects of the career path I am on and I think it’s a good fit for me. Nevertheless, it’s fun to think about what I would study if I had to do something completely different.
Applied statistics is what I think I would pick. In this age of “big data” there is an increasing need for people who can interpret the vast amounts of data being gathered about almost every aspect of our lives. Like most powerful things, statistics can be wielded for either good or bad.
Obviously I’d opt for “good.” Public health, population studies and consumer product safety design would particularly interest me.
The UW even has a Center For Studies in Demography and Ecology. Another good source for information for this kind of thing is the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
By the way, in this alternate universe, I would have to study harder, because statistics was my worst grade in both high school and undergrad…. although I did better in grad school when it was applied to the fascinating topic of language.
