hiking versus climbing

Having just come back from camping near Mount Rainier, I have mountains on my mind.
While looking at some maps, I was amused to learn that the beautiful state of Washington, has both a Jack Mountain (9066” / 2763 m.) and a Mt. Carrie (6995” / 2132 m.).  Actually Jack told me about Mt. Carrie a while ago, Jack Mount was news to me.
Jack is in North Cascades National Park (left) and Carrie is in Olympic National Park (right).  Too bad they aren’t next to each other.

I would get a kick out of climbing them, but they might be too technical for us.  Planning hikes for my trip to Colorado in June really reminded me of the significant difference between hiking and actual mountain climbing or even scrambling.  Aside from the physical challenge, I would need to put in quite a bit of work to feel confident in the backcountry without a trail.
