Waldo in Siena

It’s fall and that means it’s times for boots (no not the ones you bought last fall, silly) and stripes.  Personally, I think stripes are always in season, but for this trip we relegated ourselves to a small, boring wardrobe of solid (non-vibrant) colors that can be worn in any combination.

I’m bored or wearing these clothes and perhaps you are bored of seeing pictures of them …

But this post is about stripes.

On Saturday we took a day trip to Siena, from our base in Florence.  In the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta fully 10% of the visitors were gamely wearing stripes and half of them matched the polychromy of the church interior.

This was exceedingly amusing to me.  Once you start looking for the stripes, it is hard to stop seeing them.

The church itself was also quite beautiful.  We rated it higher than the Duomo in Florence and we were lucky enough to visit during the few weeks of the year where the spectacular marble mosaic floors were uncovered.
