Birding

Since having kids, I haven’t explored many new hobbies. However, starting in the spring 2020 during the Covid lockdown I became interested in identifying birds.   I haven’t yet bothered with binoculars, so I’m not terribly serious about it but I use an app on my phone called Merlin Bird ID. I enjoy learning the names of the birds.

As Christian Cooper, the now famous Black, birder wrote in New York Times, the other day, birding can be done anywhere.  This is a beautifully written piece by him. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/26/opinion/birds-freedom.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare

My "spark bird" is the California scrub jay.  Here is a picture of one from the Merlin Bird app.

Today I saw another California scrub jay and a northern flicker on a walk and a pair of hummingbirds on our roof, which is quite gratifying to me, since I have been trying to attract pollinators.
