Japanese

Today I noticed that the city added Japanese street signs to all of the streets of the International District, making the previously fuzzy distinction between Pioneer Square and the ID very clear.

In case you're wondering, neither this change nor the fact that I've been working on Japanese at my job for the past several months will make me learn to read Japanese.

Meaning no offense to Japanese people or culture, I have to say that the Japanese writing system is exceedingly intractable and in serious need of an overhaul.  Such sweeping changes are usually enacted by dictators. Perhaps Japan can find an otherwise benevolent one to show them the way.
