Two of my favorite places in the city, the YMCA and the public library, can be found at this intersection. They give me the gift that keeps on giving, which is the ability to help myself.
There are a lot of things I love about the Y, including the friendly atmosphere, the commitment to the community, the fact that they almost always have a pool and that they offer a wide variety of drop-in classes. The classes are included with membership, which is perfect for a dabbler like me. I occasionally go to Pilates, yoga, zumba and barre classes and I’m trying to work up to joining the masters swim team.
A few times a week Jack signs up for a squash court where he practices pitching (a rubber ball) against the wall and hitting off of his pitching machine. As a result he’s been batting really well this season. We even choose our apartment partly because of its proximity to the Y and we’re excited that our property is close to another branch of the Y. There are also reciprocal rights so on our recent trip to the southwest, we worked off some energy at a Y in Albuquerque before our flight home.
The library offers all the great things about reading and learning with none of the guilt that comes from buying books which often end up haunting me, unfinished from the bookshelf. I would estimate that I read about 20% of what I check out of the library, and, hey that is okay! I am also usually listening to an audiobook which I can check out and download straight to my phone.
Their architecture couldn’t be more different.
