heat wave 2021

I hope this title is appropriate and there are no other contenders for a 2021 heat wave.

This forecast is pretty close to what happened in the last weekend of June.   I think the overnight lows ended up being about 75 for a few nights, which is higher than the average high (!!!) and meant that even when we opened the windows at night, the house barely cooled down at all.   The kitchen reached 99 degrees and the penthouse was 105.  The outside temp was 100 degrees at 10:30 pm.   We assiduously tracked temps on different floors of our house and closed and opened windows strategically.   We even papered over some windows.   The hottest temp I saw in the basement was 79, I think.  Our bedroom was in the low 80s in the morning and reached 91 on a few days.

We dressed minimally, played with water in the boite, ate several meals in the basement and on Monday, the hottest day, went to my parents' house (with AC) in the afternoon.   Dd's daycare closed for lack of AC that day.  The trees in my parents' neighborhood made a spectacular difference as well.

Saturday morning, before things go really bad, we had a nice time at Lake Washington with Dd's friends from PEPS, who we hadn't seen since before COVID started.

Sunday, we stuck with our pre-heat-wave plans and met Jack's step mom at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, which was really fun.   We hadn't been there, or at least not that we can remember, so everything was new.   The AC in parts of the aquarium was nice and it was much less crowded than usual.

After several hours in the basement we were amused to learn that both kids still fit in laundry baskets.
