Newhalem camping, North Cascades

In August 2019 (2.5 years before I am writing this) we camped for four nights, our longest camping trip in years, at Newhalem campground in the North Cascades.   It was Dd's second camping trip after a fourth of July trip to Deception Pass State Park.

Our friends (and some of their family) joined us for one night and then my sister for two nights.  We had some really nice hikes where we hardly saw any other people, unlike on the I-90 corridor, and we toured the hydro electric dam near the campground in the dark.  On one of the middle days we visited our friends at their cabin in the Methow valley and swam with them at Pearrygin Lake.  Rounding out the trip, we visited my uncle (for the last time) and aunt in Bellingham.

Don't let Dd's smiling face in these pictures trick you.   We did have a good time, but the sleep was abysmal.   You can clearly see the four nights of the trip below where his nighttime sleep (purple) goes down from about 10 hours to 8 hours and the daytime naps are not making up for it until we get back home.   At 10 months he was still nursing and it wasn't as bright as fourth of July camping, which should have helped.   I think that at 10 months he was just too aware  of his surroundings and the novelty of tent sleeping was too much for him.   We literally spent 2+ hours a night trying to put (a screaming) baby to sleep and the rest of the night trying to get him to stay asleep.   I remember one night I think D just crashed on his own without us even saying good night because it was so loud and stressful.   One night J walked him around the campground for a long time (and then he woke up when they came in to the tent) and the next night we actually just brought the jog stroller in to the tent after walking him to sleep.   One of these nights was our anniversary and I recall a chagrined "happy anniversary" at 11 pm while Dd caught his breath between cries.
